For Students

The Maurine Gray Literacy Program helps adult students achieve their literacy or testing goals. Students are evaluated upon entering the program, and progress is closely monitored by staff.

To be eligible for tutoring, students must be at least 18 years old, be willing to meet with a tutor for one to four hours a week for at least six months, provide their own transportation to an approved tutoring site, and be able to attend a lesson at least 60 minutes. There is a one-time registration fee of $10.

The program is affiliated with ProLiteracy America, a national literacy organization. We offer:
• Basic literacy tutoring
• English as a Second Language (ESL)
• GED preparation
• Citizenship test preparation

For Tutors
Individuals interested in tutoring are encouraged to call the Maurine Gray Literacy Depot at 409-835-7924. Tutor candidates are carefully screened to determine their understanding and knowledge of working with adult literacy students.

All materials and support are provided. Basic literacy and GED students typically meet one-on-one with a tutor, while ESL students typically meet in a group or classroom setting.
